Golf clothing has a bad reputation and a history of fashion disasters, but should female players reject golf clothing to reveal all?

Glam golf clothing

If you imagining a calendar of female golfers consisting of women posing in traditional golf clothing � patterned sweaters and comfortable slacks � think again. There's a new battle now between the old fuddy-duddy image of golf clothing and the new raunchy female players who are determined to make the game sexy.

Shedding the image

The game's soul is rooted in its image and stereotypical golf clothing represents certain values � civilized, dull and traditional. But two golf players in particular seem to be doing very well in shedding that image. In fact, they seem to be shedding golf clothing altogether. The calendars of Natalie Gulbis and Sophie Sandolo are challenging every stereotype out there about golf and golf clothing. It seems you don't have to be a middle-class, middle-aged man with a bit of a paunch to play.

Lack of golf clothing

Natalie is the all-American player, a Californian who turned pro in 2001 and although she has yet to have any professional wins, she has issued three calendars of herself in golf clothing, or, lack of golf clothing.

Devaluing golf

Sophie, on the other hand, is European and lives in Monaco . Like Natalie, she has yet to win any professional tournaments but has had two calendars made. Some critics worry that by rejecting the official unspoken uniform of traditional golf clothing and embracing a racy image, the women are devaluing female golf.

Bikinis instead of sweaters

Natalie Gulbis poses in her bikini on a Californian beach, and once told FHM magazine she loved make-up and heels. But how can such apparel be appropriate for the game? Golf clothing is functional and practical to help players swing fully and battle against the elements. Shoes are a particular element of golf clothing that need to be right � players need to be able to have a solid stance before they swing their clubs.

But the Gulbis calendar barely refers to golf, she is it seems marketing herself more as a glamour model than as a golfer. Sandolo however poses in see-through dresses, but still holds a golf club, despite her inappropriate golf clothing.

Racy golf clothing

The concern that their racy golf clothing, or lack of it, demeans women's golf does have grounds. Especially when the BBC wrote the following about their game: �What Gulbis and Sandolo have in common is a keen grasp of that old adage �if you can't whip 'em, whip 'em off.'�
