Samuel L Jackson has a few things to say about golf clothing and etiquette: �Can you believe there are still clubs around that don't allow you to wear shorts? It's 97 degrees, and they say you've got to wear long pants. Who's running these places?� he asked Golf Digest magazine.

The fact is there are still private golf clubs that have a strict dress code when it comes to golf clothing on the course or in the clubhouse. The history of this lies in the fact golf has traditionally been seen as a gentleman's game. The rules make it civilized, and golf clothing reflects these ethics. Golf is of course hundreds of years old and that means it has traditions that are hard to die.

The influx of celebrity into the game however may help push the boundaries of golf clothing and fashion.

�They always give you the option of buying a pair of pants in the shop for $250, which is ridiculous,� Samuel L. Jackson added. �When I showed up at Sherwood in shorts and was told they had a pants-only policy until the Fourth of July -- they've since changed their policy -- I refused to buy a pair. Instead I got into Will Smith's locker and borrowed a pair from him. When I left I put the pants and $20 in Will's locker so he could have them cleaned.�

Golf clothing � the rules

So what are the rules when it comes to golf clothing? Dress code at private golf clubs usually requires:

• A golf shirt with a collar. Most brands of golf clothing will be designed to cohere with this dress code.
• Long trousers are only acceptable at a few clubs but the majority of golf clothing lines will have long shorts designed for the game � not gym shorts or cut-offs.
• Denim is not appreciated as appropriate golf clothing, but not just because of the snob value � denim isn't a flexible material, which makes it unsuitable for golf clothing, which should be loose enough for the golf swing.
• Proper golf shoes � sandals or running shoes are frowned on, most clubs only allow soft spikes now.

Keep your style

Just because golf clothing has a reputation for being unfashionable, doesn't mean you have to forget your style. Golf clothing is often bright and colorful, but as one style expert advised: �Colors are like kids and employees. Some work together, and get along just fine; others always fight. Choose one bright color and pair with neutrals.�

Some people believe you should even be mindful of the color socks you wear to match your golf clothing. Light coloured socks go with white shoes, and black with black � although it's a bit nerdy.
