Golf balls and New Technology
Golf Balls and New Technology
Advances in technology may help golf balls fly further and straighter but is it the way forward for the game?
Nanotechnology golf balls
Nanotechnology golf balls are now available after the US Golf Association approved the golf balls for tournament play earlier this year. The hollow steel core of the golf balls and casing means the ball is more likely to go where the golfer intended it to, rather than to the side. The technology helps the golf balls fly straighter than normal golf balls as the chemical properties of the materials used in the golf balls redistribute its weight in flight.
Unfair advantage
It's a surprising step as the regulators of the game of golf which includes the US Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in Scotland have been stringent in the past about advances in golf balls and golf clubs that would give an unfair advantage.
The regulators have traditionally kept technology out of the game to keep golf competitive and although they can't outlaw balls and golf clubs that send the ball farther than normal for example, they can withhold approval for tournament play which discourages use and sales.
New balls please
It was felt this nanotechnology in golf balls however fell within its guidelines. It is felt that if a golfer has a problem such as slicing or hooking the ball, the golf balls will help their game.
Speed limit plea
Professional golfing legend Colin Montgomerie has however called on golf ball manufacturers to limit the distances modern-day players are now able to achieve off the tee. "The ball's going further and further - changes like this are almost demanded, Monty told Radio Five Live in the UK . I wish we could control the length of the golf ball and it would save this happening. Part of the motivation for changing the speed of golf balls is the lack of land available for golf courses who want to expand or make their fairways tougher. The easy option is to change the golf ball to make it go less far, to put a speed limit on it if you like, Montgomerie said. That's what we need to do but obviously the manufacturers haven't got together to make that possible.
Big business
It is however unlikely that golf manufacturers would do such a thing unless forced they are all trying to find the next golf club or set of golf balls that will be their big commercial hit. After all, golf is probably the most played game in the world, which makes it one of the biggest, if not the biggest, sports industry.
