Dangers of golf balls

Residents in Gloucester - a town in Great Britain - expressed concerns over their safety after their homes were fitted with armoured glass and grills because of the dangers of golf balls. Local youths had picked up the bad habit of bombarding the homes with golf balls picked up from the nearby Ramada Hotel golf course. Over 3,000 golf balls were collected from nearby local gardens.

Shot gun shock

A pensioner said he had an incredible shock when one of the golf balls smashed through his front door. The 89 year-old Cliff Badham told the press: �It was just like the crack of a rifle. Bang. It frightened me, I tell you.�

Golf ball terror

One couple had armoured glass fitted as a result of the golf ball terrorization. What was just a bit of fun for the youngsters could turn nasty if somebody gets hit. Many of the residents felt they were living on a knife's edge.

Epilepsy alert

Being hit by flying golf balls is clearly incredibly dangerous. Golf balls are hard and can be lethal if they hit your head. Golf balls can travel up to speeds of 130mph, which has massive impact on the skull. Of course there are other brain injury dangers but evidence shows the chance of developing epilepsy increases with the severity of the injury. However, 95% of cases of the condition are not the result of injury.

Risk insurance

A report in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry used case studies of children struck by golf balls. The report investigated an 11-year-old who suffered two seizures three hours after being hit in the temple by a golf ball; a 16-year-old who sustained swelling and bruising from a golf ball and suffered epileptic fits four hours later, and a 12-year-old who continued suffering from seizures four years after being hit by a golf ball.

Although the risk is low, golf organising bodies encourage golf players and clubs to insure against the possibility of being struck by stray golf balls.
