Golf Balls Miss Niagara Falls
Golf Balls Miss Niagara Falls
When John Daly tried to make golfing history by hitting golf balls over the Horseshoe Falls , he lost 20 golf balls in the world's most famous waterfall.
Missing golf balls
There can't be many places in the world that aren't contaminated with missing golf balls. Even space, where few men have gone, now boasts an orbiting golf ball after a Russian astronaut hit one off his space station as part of a high profile sponsored stunt. But a year before golf balls took to circumnavigating the galaxy, John Daly managed to hit a few into another unusual spot the Niagara Falls .
Daredevil stunts
There have been many notorious stunts at Niagara Falls , such as falling through the waterfalls in daredevil barrels a stunt that has claimed many lives, but hitting golf balls? According to Daly he wanted to become the first person to drive a golf ball across the famous Horseshoe Falls . The Horseshoe Falls are 176 feet high, dumping 748,000 gallons of water per second.
Golfing history
A century after Annie Taylor became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel (and survived), Daly wanted to make golfing history as part of the Grand Opening celebrations for Niagara Fall's new world-class golf property Thundering Waters Golf Club.
Flying golf balls
The PGA and British Open Champion wanted to drive at least one of his golf balls across the vast water feature.
I have hit some towering drives in my time but to try and clear Niagara Falls would be an awesome feat, Daly had said. It's going to be a historic day for many reasons, Daly said. Alas, it was not to be.
350 yard drive
Daly had to drive at least 350 yards in the air so his golf balls would cross the falls. It was a fabulous media idea to drum up interest in the new Thundering Waters Golf Club (a signature course of Daly's). If anyone could have made the drive, Daly The Lion' should of. He's known for his power on the course and with his golf balls. Although Daly's longest drive is recorded at 399 yards, it's thought the fairways are more forgiving than the falls.
20 Lost golf balls
Sadly, Daly just missed making history as his golf balls flew 342-yards. He tried 20 times to drive his golf balls over the most dramatic water hazard in golfing history. Ball after ball disappeared into the white mist of the falls.
I can't hit any better than this, he said after his 15th shot. Daly tried to hit the golf balls from a two-tier platform rigged up for the stunt. Unfortunately for him, his second golf ball just missed his target when it bounced off the wall.
I killed that. That's all I got, he said after the next shot.
Adventurous spirit
But Daly does join a long list of adventurous spirited men and women who have tried to take on one of the world's greatest wonders - Niagara Falls- even if he is the first to have tried with a set of golf balls.
