Cricket Equipment – Cricket Clothing – What Colour Are You?

Cricket Equipment Cricket Clothing What Colour Are You?

Have you ever wondered how the cricket team colours of clothing are decided? Read on for a comprehensive guide on cricket clothing and equipment used in the game.

There are two types of cricket clothing which are worn in the game of cricket. The clothing that is worn is governed by what type of match it is.

Test Cricket

Test Cricket is the most traditional cricket match and is the oldest type of cricket match established. The Test Match is considered the ultimate test of cricket ability between two countries and remains highly regarded by its spectators all over the world.

Because of its status, the players in a test cricket match will be fully equipped in white cricket clothing. This means that the shirts and trousers worn by the cricket players will be full white. However there are exceptions when it comes to the cricket equipment. Cricket helmets and caps are allowed to be in the colour of the team, so if you're a novice to the game of cricket, aim for the players heads to find out which nation they are playing for!

Another exception to the rule of cricket clothing during a test match is that the sweater cricket players wear can have the team colour on the V-neck border. The umpires at a test match wear standard cricket clothing consisting of black trousers and a white shirt.

One-Day International (ODI)

A One-Day Cricket International is a cricket match which is played in one day and consists of just 50 overs per side between two international teams. Unlike Test matches, the ODI is quite a recently developed cricket match, with the first ODI being played on 5 th January 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia .

In the 1970s, Kerry Packer, a billionaire who owned Channel 9 TV stations in Australia , changed the face of cricket forever when he established his rival tournament, World Series Cricket (WSC) using his own camera equipment and production team. The WSC introduced many of the features of one day cricket which today are commonplace, for example, Packer dressed his players in coloured cricket clothing, added flood lights to the pitch, used white cricket balls and paid his cricket team phenomenally high salaries.

The first of the matches with coloured uniforms was the WSC Australians in wattle gold versus WSC West Indians in coral pink, played at VFL Park in Melbourne on 17th January 1979. In ODI matches, the entire cricket clothing is coloured according to the specific cricket team colours of each nation. In this instant, the umpires are even allowed to adopt coloured cricket clothing.
