Westwood to miss Players Golf Tournament

World Number one golfer Lee Westwood will not be taking part in this year’s Players Championship.

Due to the fact that Westwood is not a fully paid–up US Tour member, the PGA rules state he is only allowed to play in three tournaments in America other than the Majors, the world golf championship and the Players.

He has chosen the Honda Classic in March between the two World Golf Championship events, the Houston Open in March, just before the Masters and the St Judes Classic in June, a week before the US Open

"I’d go over for the Players’ if I could play the week before but I don’t want to get there having not played for four weeks since Augusta,’ said Westwood.

"So I’ll play a couple of European Tour events instead."

In the meantime, Westwood tees off today at the Abu Dhabi Championship, in a star-studded field that includes all of last season’s Major winners.
Phil Mickelson will be teeing off with Graeme McDowell after a two month break; he last played in Singapore in mid-November.

Open champion Louis Oosthuizen will tee off with defending champion Martin Kaymer.
