Tiger Wood Feature

There’s never been a golf player whose shadow has been larger than the greatest course in the world: Augusta National, home of The Masters.

But the crown jewel of the PGA won’t be in play when the tour returns to Georgia next week.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods announced via Twitter on Tuesday that he will miss the Masters to undergo back surgery to repair a pinched nerve that has been irking him for several months.

It will be the first time in 20 years that Woods has missed the Masters, the tournament at which he first captured the imagination of the American sports public, winning the event by 12 strokes as a 21-year-old in 1997.

The surgery was performed on Monday in Park City, Utah. An early estimate from ESPn sources puts Woods’ recovery time at 4-1/2 months.
