Davis Love III to face layoff with neck surgery

Veteran golfer Davis Love III will take some time away from the Tour for the next few months to undergo neck surgery on Friday.

The operation is believed to help with numbness and weakness of the spine and joint bone spurs, that the 2012 Ryder Cup captain has been suffering.

"I've been working around it and it's been a nagging thing for a long time," Love told GolfChannel.com.

"The last three months, it's been more than a nagging thing. It's just been a constant annoyance and needs to be fixed."

"I've been anxious for months and months," the 48-year-old Love added.

"The nurse called about my pre-op meeting on Thursday and I told her, 'I can't wait.' I'm going to be way better when I get back."

In more positive news for Love, the USGA announced they were awarding him their highest honour, the 2013 Bob Jones Award.

"Through his actions on and off the course, Davis has inspired a generation of golfers with his passion for the game and respect for its history," USGA president Glen D. Nager said in a statement. "He exhibits the traits of honesty and sportsmanship displayed by the award's namesake."
