Byrd wins Tournament of Champions

Jonathan Byrd has won the first PGA Tournament of the New Year-The Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii

After a tense play-off he beat Robert Garrigus on the second hole.

They both finished the Tournament 24 under, ending their final rounds with six under 67’s.

Irishman Graeme McDowell narrowly missed out on a place in the play-off by one shot, when he equalled the course record of 62, 11 under par.

In the play-offs both pared the par 5 18th hole, forcing the play-off onto the first tee.

Byrd putted a long straight shot for a birdie and Garrigus was forced to concede the hole after he missed an awkward four and half foot putt.

Byrd, who just over three months ago feared he was in danger of losing his card, before he won in Las Vegas which earnt him a place in this Tournament said

"I can't sit here and not think about where I was toward the end of the season last year, fighting for my card, I'm just thankful, I'm overwhelmed, I'm grateful, all of the above."

It is Byrd’s fifth win in his golfing career and by far his biggest. It earns him an automatic invitation to the Masters and because it is his second win in the last two months, he is exempt for qualifying for the US Open.
