Fowler wins first Pro Title at Korea Open

Rickie Fowler won the OneAsia Tour’s Korea Open on Sunday, finishing six shots ahead of US Open champion Rory McIlroy.

The win at Woo Jeong Hills Golf Club in Cheonan, South Korea was the 22-year-old’s first professional title as he closed with a 3-under 68, for a 16-under and a cheque for $249,864.

"It was a lot of fun," Fowler, the 2010 PGA Tour rookie of the year, said.

"I played well early on in the final round and then I was comfortable over the last few holes. Overall, I enjoyed the whole week.

"It feels great to have the first win. I played well all week, although I did have to hang in on Friday and post a score. But on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, I had good control of my ball, I drove well and I made some putts."

McIlroy, who finished third in the event in 2009, had been just one shot behind Fowler after the first round but was unable to catch the American.

The 22-year-old from Holywood, Northern Ireland will be staying on the Asian continent for a while yet as his next port of call is China.

McIlroy will be joining Englishmen Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter for the October 10-16 China Golf Challenge.

South Korea’s Kim Meen-whee (71) was third at 10 under, and countryman Y.E. Yang (75) followed at 5 under.
