McIlroy rises to No.3 in World Rankings

Rory McIlroy is one step closer to matching girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki as the number one in his sport, as he moved up to career best No 3 on the latest World Rankings list.

But the 22-year-old is not satisfied with the way he got there.

The reigning US Open champion finished third in Sunday’s KLM Dutch Open at the Hilversumsche Golf Club in Utrecht, The Netherlands - enough to unseat Germany’s Martin Kaymer who failed to make the cut.

"Finishing third this week is a consolation more than anything,” he told the golfbytourmiss.com at the weekend,

"My competitive spirit is such that I would rather have gone to third in the world by winning this week.

"If I were to have closed out in these (his last two) tournaments I would comfortably have gone to No. 3 in the world and possibly even to No. 2, but I just haven't been able to manage that these past two weeks."

Kaymer, the World No 1 for a brief spell after he won the US PGA Championship last year, missed the cut at Hilversumsche and as a consequence has tumbled from No 3 in the World Rankings to No 7 with McIlroy replacing him.

The Ulsterman will next take a fortnight's break from competition before his next event, the Alfred Dunhill Links, where his father, Gerry McIlroy will again be his pro-am partner.

By contrast, 33-year-old Englishman Dyson was over the moon with his own surge up the rankings and his performance over the weekend.

Two shots behind leaders Gary Orr and James Kingston entering the final round, Dyson birdied four of the last seven holes to clinch his second title of the year, finishing at 12-under 268.

Dyson joined legendary golfers Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer as three-time winners in the national championship

"I am absolutely delighted to have my name on the same trophy as Seve and Bernhard. It's a dream come true," Dyson said.

"To win any title once is very tough but to win the same title three times is a fantastic feeling." he added.
