Webb Simpson to miss Bridgestone

2012 US Open champion Webb Simpson will sit out a second tournament in a row following his absence from the British Open last week, with the news that he will also pass on the Bridgestone Invitational that begins Thursday.

With the confirmed attendance of Bubba Watson (US Masters champion), Ernie Els (British Open champion) and Keegan Bradley (PGA Champion) at the lucrative $8 million event, only Simpson will be missing from the list of reigning major champions.

But for Simpson, family comes first. He missed the British Open because of his wife's pregnancy, although there was a possibility he would have made Bridgestone if his wife had given birth earlier.

"The next eight weeks are going to be up in the air,” Simpson had said after his victory at the US Open. “We're going to see what we can do".

His wife, Dowd, on the other hand, gave a much better and a realistic answer.

"I don't think he is going to play the British Open just in case I go into labour," she told reporters. "It would make Webb too nervous to hop over the pond and then have to try to get back".

Even now that baby girl Willow Grace Simpson has successfully come into the world on July 28, Simpson's paternal responsibilities mean he will spend the week with wife and daughter before going directly to South Carolina for next week's PGA Championship, the final major of the season.
