Kuchar leads the way at Riviera

A little bit of R & R was just what the doctor ordered for Matt Kuchar's game, as the rejuvenated Floridian went bogey-free at Riviera to lead after Day One.

The 34-year-old was back on the PGA Tour after three weeks soaking up some rays in Palm Springs and Hawaii with his family, and he brought that sun with him to the Northern Trust Open firing a seven-under 64 in balmy conditions to lead after the opening day.

"It was a great day," said a smiling Kuchar.

"It's always fun to have bogey-free days, especially around this golf course. I got off to a great start, birdied my first three and all three were kick-in birdies.

"Just drove it well today which is a big key around here. The greens are pretty tricky and pretty firm this year so coming out of the rough, it's difficult to get a ball to stop close to the hole."

The American leads the field by one stroke, ahead of Spaniard Sergio Garcia. The man from  from Castellon perhaps performed even more admirably than Kuchar as he was unable to play with such welcoming weather.

Thick fog rolled in whilst Garcia still played his round, indeed he could hardly see the flagstick on his last three holes!

"We were on the seventh tee. And then that marine layer or fog or whatever you want to call it, it came in very quickly," the 33-year-old Spaniard told reporters.
"I was wondering if we would be able to keep going. In some spots, here and there, it was tough to see the pin and stuff."
