Mediate debuts in Champions Tour with win

Rocco Mediate ensured his debut on the Champions Tour was a winning one with victory at the Allianz Championship on Sunday.

This feat makes the 50-year-old the 16th Champions Tour player to do so. After shooting a 61 in the second round, Mediate nailed a birdie on the last hole to earn the win ahead of Bernhard Langer and Tom Pernice Jr. with a total core of 17-under 199.

''I'm ecstatic,'' Mediate said. ''I have been saying all week it's never easy. It shouldn't be easy. I was prepared to make that putt (at No. 18), but I didn't have to.''

Pernice Jr. knows all about the luck of the debutante, having himself been the last player to win in their inaugural Champions Tour match three years ago. He is still seeking his second title since that victory at the SAS Championship in 2009.

''I played better than any other day as far as ball-striking, but I just couldn't make enough putts,'' Pernice said. ''Rocco played well; he deserved to win. He battled down the stretch.''

Mediate will add the trophy to his six PGA Tour titles, and is just as proud of the victory he achieved at the Old Course at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, Florida.

''This means as much to me as anything I've done,'' Mediate said.
