Rory McIlroy to pitch at Giants-Astros game

Rory McIlroy is no stranger to thousands of people watching his every move on the world's finest sporting stages.

But before he takes on the packed galleries at the Olympic Club in San Francisco for the 2012 U.S. Open this week, he'll be involved in quite a different sport - tossing the first pitch at Tuesday's Major League Baseball game at the Giant-Astros game at AT&T Park.

McIlroy has been practising his throwing arm on the fairway but he's still not settled on how he's going to wind-up on the pitchers mound.

"I definitely would rather get booed at a baseball game than on a golf course," McIlroy joked. "It will be the first experience for me.

"I don't know whether to play it conservatively and just lob it into his hand or go for the fast one. I'm not sure."

He'll also be taking home a keepsake or two, surely another a first for the Ulsterman's mantlepiece - a McIlroy bobblehead doll, with one given out to all spectators of Tuesday's game.

"I think it's maybe better looking than me, which is a good thing," McIlroy said.

Baseball aside, McIlroy returns to the major championship on Thursday that he so famously won at Congressional and truly launched him onto the world stage.

"In golfing terms I feel like it's changed me a lot. I feel like it's given me a lot of confidence. And I feel like I have a chance in these tournaments every time I tee it up."
