As the case grows against the controversial long or belly putter, and with a universal ban expected to be announced by the golfing organizations, another leading member of the PGA Tour has added his voice to the call for it's outlawing, Brandt Snedeker current FedEx Cup Champion.
"I
feel like they should be banned," explained Snedeker, who is considered
to be one of the finest putters on Tour. "I've got no problem with
longer putters if you want to make sure they're not anchored; I've just
got a problem with anchoring.
"There's a reason why guys that
have belly putters use them – they work," he continued. "If they didn't
work, they wouldn't use them."
"I think it's the influx of junior
golfers using belly putters," he noted. "There's a whole generation of
kids right now that are growing up playing golf, never using a short
putter. Is that keeping with the traditions of the game?"
Any
kind of ban would effect a series for top players including 2011 PGA
Champion Keegan Bradley who is staunch in his defense of the longer
putter.
‘I’m going to do whatever I have to do to protect myself and the other players on tour,’ Bradley said.
It’s the way we’ve always practised and made our living. I find it harsh.’
While
Snedeker acknowledged there were players who would be hit hard by any
ruling, he felt the long-term good of the game had to come first for the
likes of the U.S. Golf Association.
"Their charge is protecting
the game of golf, not making sure it's OK for Tour players," he added.
"What's best for the game of golf might hurt a couple guys in the short
run, but it might benefit the game in the long run."
