Jhonattan Vegas has won the Bob Hope Classic after a three way player between defending champion Bill Hass and fellow rookie Gary Woodland.
All three golfers finished on 27 under, Hass carding a 66 to catch the overnight leaders, who both shot a final round of 69.
The first play-off hole was the par five 18th. Hass was eliminated by Vegas and Woodland after they both birdied the hole and Hass could only manage a par.
The par four 10th was the second playoff hole. Vegas’ tee shot found the water, while Woodland landed neatly on the fairway, but was followed by a shot into the bunker.
Vegas took his penalty drop and then hit the ball to within 15 foot of the hole. Woodland thinned his bunker shot across the green and then missed his putt for par. Vegas then only needed to make the putt to win.
It is his Vegas first PGA Title after just five career starts. He is the first Venezuelan to win a tour event
"Just to think about winning on the PGA TOUR, that's something," Vegas said. "But to make it happen is something else, and it's a crazy feeling. It was tough today to stay neutral and play golf, and that's why. To my country, I hope this means a lot. I really hope it means people changing (their minds) about the sport."
He is also the first rookie to win the 52 year old event.
