Donald's 'major' ambition

World Number One Luke Donald is getting ready to tee it up Thursday at Riviera Country Club for the Northern Trust Open, and all eyes will be on last years PGA and European tour money title holder.

"The best part of being No. 1 is knowing that my best golf is good enough to get me to that spot, just from a confidence and mental standpoint," Donald told reporters at Riviera on Wednesday.

"It's gratifying to know that the hard work is paying off. The worst part? I suppose the slight added burden of expectation but I felt like I've dealt with that pretty well so far."

While some media feel it'll be unlikely for the Englishman to recreate his phenomenally successful 2011 - especially with the apparent reemergence of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson - the unassuming Donald has the game to back it up when needed, just ask PGA money title-runner up Webb Simpson.

The only thing missing from Donald’s resume is a major championship.

“I’d love to win a major. Don’t get me wrong,” he told PGATour.com. “I believe my golf right now is good enough to win a major. I don’t think it’s lacking anything ... for whatever reason, it hasn’t quite happened.

“But at the same time I think there have been a lot of guys who have won one major that I wouldn’t swap my career for.”
