Couples: Woods in Presidents Cup Team

All the talk of Tiger Woods needing to play more games, or prove himself in more tournaments before Presidents Cup team decision time in early fall, can be conclusively put to bed.

Team USA captain Fred Couples has already decided.

Tiger is in.

"I've told him that he's going to be on the team," Couples said from the practice rounds of the Boeing Classic. "There is no reason for me to wait till Sept. 26 to pick Tiger. He's the best player in the world forever."

Ten players automatically qualify for the team based on points built up over the past two years.

The captain is then given two wildcard picks to fill out the squad, which will compete against a team of non-European players in Australia in November.

Woods has missed out on much of the summer with injuries to his left knee and left Achilles’ tendon.

Upon his return at the Bridgestone Invitational in early August, and the subsequent PGA Championship, he has showed a lack of form.

The former No.1 failed to make the cut at the major for the first time ever - and underwent a messy public split with long-time caddie Steve Williams.

"Is he playing well right now? No. (But) he almost won (The Masters) four months ago so you don't do that by playing poor golf," Couples said.

"In my opinion, when you're the best player in the world for 12 straight years and you're not on a team, there's something wrong.”

"Everyone else can have their opinion, but as far as I know [assistant captain] Jay Haas and I are the captains and we want him on this team."
