Woods and event sponsor clash in war of words

Woods's decision to miss the World Championship tournament in Shanghai earlier this month, for a lucrative exhibition match against Rory McIlroy, was met by fury by the event's sponsors.

The World No1 was criticised by Giles Morgan, the global head of sponsorship at HSBC bank, the tournament's backers.

Morgan accused Woods of a lack of "respect" for the tournament and derided his lucrative made-for-TV contest with McIlroy as "meaningless".

Woods responded by claiming he was an "independent contractor."

"I just think it's important to be fresh, it's important to be ready for the major championships, the World Golf Championships, the Players Championship.

"Everybody has different times when they like to take the off season so you've just got to figure out what's best for you."

Instead, Woods chose to play his first competitive golf in over a month at the Turkish Airlines Open.

The event in Anatalya was won by 23-year-old Frenchman Victor Dubuisson, while the American finished tied for third, four shots behind.
