PGA Championship

Tiger Woods has been as much of a non-factor on the PGA Tour as any year since he first turned pro in 1996; but Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson still believes there’s a place for Woods on the US team come the autumn.

Watson said if Woods can get healthy and play well down the stretch – particularly in the British Open, Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship – three events that would likely qualify Woods for the FedExCup playoffs – he’ll also get a spot on the Ryder Club team.

The situation is rather like Woods’ 2011 campaign, when he missed two Majors due to injury, but still was named to the team by then-captain Fred Couples.

Couples said his reason for picking Woods was that he was “the best player in the world forever.”

Couples had the advantage of waiting until October for a Ryder Cup that was played in November.

Watson doesn’t have that luxury, since this year’s battle between the US and Europe will take place in late September.
