Donald wants to remain Number One

Newly crowned World Number One, Luke Donald is determined to hold onto the spot when he plays in the Memorial Tournament beginning today.

Donald became the number one ranked golfer on Sunday when he beat fellow Englishman Lee Westwood at the BMW Championship, and in doing so removed him from the position

He becomes the fifth golfer to become number one without winning a Major; he joins the ranks of Fred Couples, David Duval, Ina Woosnam and Lee Westwood

"As a kid you dream about winning majors and winning tournaments, but for me, I always kept an eye out on the world rankings," Donald said .

"But for the bulk of my career Tiger (Woods) was so far ahead that it never really crept into my mind. But in the last year or so, there's been more of an upheaval in the rankings and there's been a lot more movement, so I knew the opportunity was there."

Donald also comes to the Memorial Tournament ranked second in the FedEx Cup, only behind Bubba Watson by 29 points.

Donald will be tee off at 8.04 am today and will play with Phil Mickelson, who returns after a two week break and current Masters Champion Charl Swartzel.
