Ted Potter Jr. wins Greenbrier Classic

Ted Potter Jr. earned his first PGA Tour victory in his rookie year, beating Troy Kelly in a playoff Sunday in the Greenbrier Classic.

Not only does he claim a sizeable winner's cheque for $1,098, 000, jumps from 13rd to 51st in the FedEx Cup standings, and gains a two-year PGA Tour exemption but he also ticks off a box on his bucket list - qualify for the U.S. Masters.

So much upside achieved over a few days play when just a matter of months ago, Potter's dreams seemed as far away as ever with five straight missed cuts, having only qualified from the Nationwide Tour last year, where he'd spent a good 7 years.

"When you're missing cuts every week, you get down on yourself," Potter said. "I mean, it's hard to pick yourself back up. But the plus side for me is I was still young. I just knew I had plenty of time and just be patient and it will come back around again."

With his second straight 6-under 64 to match Kelly and then a cool 4-footer on the third hole of the playoff, Potter changed everything.

"It was just a big relief," Potter said. "All the struggles the last few weeks, knowing that now I've got a couple years to try to improve on my game and win some more tournaments."

Belying his world ranking of 218, Potter clawed down Kelly's four stroke lead with only four holes to play. A bit of magic that his fictional namesake Harry would have been proud of.
