Rory McIlroy took one step further in promising a new era in golf with
his second major championship, after winning the PGA Championship on
Kiawah Island Sunday.
What had been a close call before Sunday
turned into a display of dominance as McIlroy shot a 13-under 275 to
destroy the field.
The young Ulsterman's closest rival was the little-heralded Englishman
David Lynn, who was some margin back - a record-setting eight shots that
harkened back to McIlroy's maiden major at Congressional last year.
"To sit up here and see this trophy and call myself a multiple major champion, I know I've talked about it in the past, and not many people have done it," McIlroy said. "I'm very privileged to join such an elite list of names."
McIlroy
played an unblemished final round, the only one from the top six placed
golfers not to drop a shot, and finished off his round with the perfect
coup de grace - a 25 footer for his sixth birdie of the round.
Already
media have rushed to appoint McIlroy heir-apparent to fallen idol Tiger
Woods, who yet again missed out on a major and will now have 8 long
months before he can once more take a stab at Jack Nicklaus' major
record that weighs him down like a millstone.
