Fowler wins maiden PGA title at Quail Hollow

Rickie Fowler won a three-way play-off that included World No1 Rory McIlroy to win the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.

DA Points joined the pair of 23-year-olds after the trio finished on 14 under for the tournament, but Fowler was the only one to birdie the replayed 18th hole for the title, his 67th PGA Tour start since turning professional in 2009.

A sensational 51-degree wedge approach shot by the young American landed 4 feet from the hole and gave him a simple putt for victory, McIlroy and Points could only par.

"I didn't want to play it safe," Fowler said. "I had a good number (133 yards), and I was aiming right of the hole with the wind coming out of the right, and if I hit a perfect shot, it comes down right on the stick. ... I hit a perfect shot at the right time, and I was going for it."

Many hope that Fowler, who also beat McIlroy in his only other pro win at the Korea Open last year, will begin a sporting rivalry with the young Ulsterman that could last for many years to come.

"It's awesome. It's a long wait but well worth it," said Fowler, who at 23 is the same age as the Northern Irishman. "I've been looking forward to playing with Rory for a long time."

"It's great to see," McIlroy said. "He probably has went through a lot of scrutiny and a lot of pressure trying to get that first win out of the way. Hopefully that'll ease the pressure a little bit."

Added Fowler: "Now I've got some credibility."
